2018 The Challenge Pyrenees Tour Trail

Changes for 2018

  • 4 steps over 3 days
  • Step 1 on Piau modified for the second loop (subject to the agreement of the Park)
  • Vertical Kilometer in the evening rather than the afternoon
  • Step 3 of the Pic departing from Espiaube rather than Pla d’Adet
  • Last step on the Pacours du Tour du Néouveille with the Merlans loop – Col de Bastanet – Hourquette de Caderolles in the opposite direction of 2017

Warning: the course has many parts on mountain trail where it is not easy to run

and also there is still 7700 m of D + in 100 km to enchainer on 3 days

Wednesday, August 22
17:00 – 20:00: Collection of bibs and verification of the Pyrenees Tour Trail challenge bags – Village partners

Thursday, August 23
7:30: Shuttle buses for the start of the first step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from Vielle-Aure
09:00: departure of the 1st step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from the center of Piau Engaly
11:30 – 15:00: arrivals from the 1st step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from the center of Piau Engaly
13:00 – 16:00: return of the riders of the 1st step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail by shuttles from Piau Engaly
18:30 – 20:30: Pasta Party
20:00 – 21:00: departures staggered (every 20 s in the reverse order of classification) of the 2nd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from the center of Vignec
21:00 – 23:00: staggered arrivals of the 2nd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail at Pla d’Adet Saint Lary Soulan
21:30 – 23:30: return of the riders of the 2nd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail by the Pla d’Adet cable car Saint Lary Soulan

Friday, August 24

6:30 am: shuttles for the start of the 3rd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from Vielle-Aure
07:15: departure of the 3rd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail from Espiaube
10:30 – 16:00: arrivals from the 3rd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail at the Pic du Midi de Bigorre
12:30 – 17:00: return of the riders of the 3rd step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail by cable car then by shuttle from La Mongie
18:30 – 20:30: Pasta Party

Saturday, August 25

07:00: Departure of the 4th step of the Pyrenees Tour Trail on the route of the Tour du Néouvielle from the center of Saint-Lary Soulan (Tourist Office)
12:00: Arrival of the first ones of the Pyrenees Tour Trail on the Place de Vielle-Aure
20:00: Award ceremony of the Tour du Néouvielle and the Pyrenees Tour Trail (Place de Vielle-Aure)
Sunday, August 26
12:15: Closing buffet of the Grand Raid of the Pyrenees in the presence of all the partners and volunteers

Supply composition
In Piau, La Mongie and Merlans restaurant (round trip): oranges, bananas, bread, cheese, ham, sausage, dried fruits, salted cakes, cakes, chocolate in tablet, still water, sparkling water, coke, tea, coffee and soup

Course
Step 1
The first step is 21 km for 1500 m of D +.
From Piau, the riders climb to the top of the station on the Tour des Cirques circuit, return to the center of Piau, go back up the Badet valley to the Portbiel Port; cross under the Hourquette of Héas towards the Hourquette de Chermentas before descending to Badet lake and then return to the starting point for an arrival in Piau.
The max time is 5:45. There is a time barrier at the intermediate crossing in Piau (Km 8.5, 800 m D +) that must be passed in less than 2 hours. Refueling at the intermediate crossing in Piau and on arrival.

Mandatory equipment
– Personal cup for drinking liquids (water, coca and soup) at the refreshments
– survival blanket (minimum 2 m²)

2nd step
The second step is a vertical kilometer. It follows exactly the route of the “Vignec Vertical” proposed by Saint Lary Patou Trail. It has a length of 4.2 km, for a height difference of 1000 m. The departure is at Vignec. The arrival is a little above the Pla d’Adet.
Max time of 2h. No refueling.

Step 3
The third step is 32 km for 2800 m of D +.
From Espiaube, the runners follow the route of the Ultra Tour to the summit of the Pic du Midi, via Merlans, Col de Bastanet, Mongie and Col de Sencours.
The max time is 9h. There is a time barrier in Merlans (km 5, 600 m D +) that must be passed in less than 1h15, a barrier to the Mongie (Km 21, 1400 m D +) to be passed in less than 5h45 and a barrier to the Col de Sencours (Km 28, 2300 m D +) that must be spent in less than 8 hours. Refueling at Merlans and La Mongie.

Step 4
The fourth step is 43 km for 2400 m of D +, and takes exactly the route of the Tour du Néouvielle. The full description is HERE.
